Per History of Pownal, Maine, Israel was included in a list of surveyors, field-drivers, and hog-reeves in 1808.

Israel sold his property in Cumberland County to accompany his favorite minister, Rev. Daniel Plummer, to the Far West in the fall of 1817. Together with 14 other families, a total of 78 people, they traveled through Portland, Haverhill, Albany, up the valley of the Mohawk, across to Olean Point on the headwaters of the Allegheny River, down the Allegheny by boats and rafts to Pittsburgh, then down the Ohio to Lawrenceburg, Indiana where most of them located on Greenbriar Ridge, now known as the village of Manchester. Israel settled near "Mule Town" about 11 miles from Lawrenceburg on the Indianapolis State Road.

The move was apparently due to the extreme cold and widespread crop failures in 1816, the year of "eighteen hundred and froze to death" which resulted from the world-wide dust cloud following the explosion of Mt. Tambara in Indonesia.

Before he left Maine, Israel was thrown from a horse which trod on his forehead and smashed his skull in just over the eye. He was taken up for a corpse, many pieces of bone were taken out, and he carried the scar into his grave.

Per Indiana Land Entries, Cincinnati District, 1801-1840, Israel participated in the following land transactions in Dearborn County T6N, R2W of 1st PM on 26 Dec 1817:

- Filed for purchase of NE 1/4 Sec 17. Relinquished.

- Purchased SE 1/4 Sec 17

- Purchased NE 1/4 Sec 20. Relinquished W 1/2 to George Clark, 18 March 1830. Vol. II, p.87, shows a final certificate #142 for the entire NE 1/4 to Israel Noyes.

Israel was listed as the head of family in the 40-50 age group on the 1840 Census in Dearborn County, Indiana. Included in the household in 1840 were 1 female 30-40, probably his wife Abigail; and 2 females 10-15, probably his daughters Amanda and Lucinda. Israel Jr. is probably also in the 1830 Census (Dearborn Co., p.446) under the name of Isaac. Included in this census were a female 20-30, probably his wife Abigail; 1 female 5-10; and 2 females under 5, probably his daughters Amanda and Lucinda.

In 1843, about 26 years after coming to Manchester, Israel organized the Manchester Universalist Church with James P. Milliken and Gilbert Platt. The church was strictly a layman's church which was not visited by a Universalist minister before that time.

Israel Noyes grew to manhood in Pennsylvania and came to Ripley County, Indiana at a time when pioneer conditions prevailed, and securing undeveloped land, cleared it off and made of it one of the best farms in his neighborhood, and here he is still residing. He is a Republican, having lived through the birth and growth of that party. The Methodist Episcopal church holds his membership, and receives his hearty support both of money and personal effort. After coming to Ripley County, Indiana, Mr. Noyes was united in marriage with Isabella Perdue, born in Ripley County in 1844, and she died on the homestead in 1874, having born her husband the following children; James M.; Leander, who died at the age of twelve years; Mattie who married a Mr. Williams, a farmer and blacksmith , lives in Ripley County; Charles who is an Illinois farmer; Cora who died at the age of sixteen years; and Anna who married a physician and moved to one of the southern states. After the death of his first wife, Israel Noyes was married second to Harriet Perdue, a sister of the first Mrs. Noyes, and she died shortly afterward, leaving no issue. As his third wife Israel Noyes married Bettie Hyatt, who was born in 1849 in Ripley County, Indiana and they had children as follows: Emma, who married a Mr. Kenneth, a farmer, lives in Dearborn County, Indiana; Elmer, who resides on the homestead in Ripley County; and William who is a farmer of Ripley County.

Descendants of Reverend William Noyes: James Noyes Rev. Born, 1608, in Cholderton, Wilts, England. Died, 22 Oct 1656, in Newbury, Massachusetts. He married Sarah Brown, daughter of Joseph Brown, 1633. Matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford University, 22 Aug 1627, but was not graduated. In Mar 1633, he and his wife Sarah, brother Nicholas, and cousin Thomas Parker, with others, took the oath of "Supremacy and Allegiance", to pass for New England, in the "Mary and John", of London, Robert Sayres, master.

In 1633-34 he preached in Mystic, now Medford, Massachusetts and was made freeman 3 Sep 1634, was invited to Watertown but declined and with his brother Nicholas and cousin Thomas Parker, was among the first settlers of Newbury, Massachusetts in May 1634 or 35. Rev. Mr. Parker and Rev. Mr. Noyes began, almost immediately, to form a church. The first meeting was on the Sabbath and held in the open air, under a tree. Rev. Mr. Parker was chosen pastor "in the waye of church discipline which he then preached for, the congregational waye" (Newbury, p.17). Mr. James Noyes was, at the same time, chosen teacher of the church and remained so for more than 20 years. Will made 17 Oct 1656, five days before his death, and proved 26 Nov 1656. In it he mentions wife Sara and children, brother Deacon Nicholas Noyes and cousin Rev. Thomas Parker. Inventory of estate amounted to £657, 11 shillings, 4 penney.

On IGI as parents, but no marriage is recorded here James is listed as being born of "Godly parents". His own father was a minister of "the same town". One of James' sons was one of the founders of Yale University. James married Sarah Brown not long before coming to New England in 1634. He was married to Sarah BROWN before 1634 in England.

Rev. Nicholas Noyes' Account of His Uncle
Rev. James Noyes
Mather's "Magnolia"

"Mr. James Noyes was born in 1608, in Choulderton, Wiltshire, of Godly parents. His father was a Minister of the same town - a very learned man, - the school-master of Mr. Robert Parker, and he had much of his education and tutorage under Mr. Thomas Parker.

He was called by him from Brazen Nose College in Oxford, to help him in teaching the Free School at Newbury, where they taught school together til the time they came to New England.

He was converted in his youth by the ministry of Dr. Twiss and Mr. Thomas Parker, and was admired for his piety, and his virtue in his younger years. The reason of his coming to New England was because he could not comply with the ceremonies of the Church of England.

He was married in England to Miss Sarah Brown, of South Hampton, not long before he came to New England, which was in 1634.

Noyes-Gilman: "Soon after being called to teach in the Free School at Newbury, England, Sir Richard Saltonstall, Henry Sewall, Richard and Stephen Drummer and others were organizing a colony for the purpose of stock-raising in New England, and they interested in their enterprise many Wiltshire men. These, with Rev. Thomas Parker as their spiritual guide and teacher, became the nucleus of the colony, and through their cousin, both James, then but twenty-five, and his younger brother Nicholas joined the colony. James married Sarah Brown before emigrating.

In the same ship came Mr. Thomas Parker, Mr. James Noyes, and a younger brother, Nicholas Noyes, who was then a single man; Mr. Parker and Mr. Noyes, and others that came over with them, fasted and prayed together many times before they undertook this voyage; and on the sea Mr. Parker and Mr. Noyes preached or expounded, one in the forenoon, and the other in the afternoon, every day during the voyage, unless some extraordinary thing intervened; and were abundant in prayer.

When they arrived, Mr. Parker was first called to preach at Ipswich, and Mr. Noyes at Mistick, at which places they continued nigh a year. He had a motion made unto him to be minister at Watertown; but Mr. Parker and others of his acquaintance, settling at Newbury, and gathering a tenth of the churches in the colony, and calling Mr. Noyes to be teacher of it, he preferred that place, being loth to be separated from Mr. Parker and brethren that had so often fasted and prayed togetheer, both in England and on the Atlantic sea. So he became the teacher of that church, and continued, painful and successful in that station something above twenty years, without any considerable trouble in the church.

Notwithstanding his principles, as to Dicipline were something differing from many of his brethren, there was such condescension on both parts, that peace and order were not interrupted.

He was much loved and honored in Newbury, - his memory is precious there to this day, and his Catachism (which is a publick and standing testimony of his understanding, and orthodoxy in the principles of religion), is publicly and privately used in that town hitherto. He was very learned in the Tongues, and in the Greek, excelled most. He was much read in the Fathers and the Schoolmen, and much esteemed in the Ministry.

His conversation was so unquestionably Godly, that they who differed from him in the smaller matters as to discipline, held a most amicable correspondence with him, and had an high estimate of him. *** He was as religious at home as abroad, in his family and in secret, as he was publickly; and they that best knew him, most loved and esteemed him. *** He had a long and tedious sickness, which he bore patiently and cheerfully; and he died joyfully, in the forty-eighth year of his age, Oct. 22, 1656. He left six sons and two daughters, all of which lived to be married and have children, though since one son and one dughter be dead. He hath now living, fifty-six children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and his brother that came over with him a single man, is, through the mercy of God, yet living, and hath of children; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, above an hundred; which is an instance of divine favor, in making the families of his servants in the wilderness like a Flock."

"Massachusetts & Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis"

He also calls 'Thomas Parker' the cousin of James & William (p. 57):

"James matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, on Aug. 22, 1627, but did not gradute, having been pursuaded by his cousin, Mr. Thomas Parker, to help him teach the free school at Newbury in Berkshire and to continue his own education with him. When the Mary and John reached Boston in New England in May, 1634, on the voyage from Southampton, these two cousins and several other kinsmen, including James's brother Nicholas, were among the passengers. Parker and Noyes took the Freeman's Oath on Sept. 3, 1634...."

"Mr. [James] Noyes's will, made Oct. 17, 1656, gave to his wife while unmarried the ordering of his substance, she to take counsel of cousin Thomas Parker, brother Nicholas Noyes and William Gerrish." [Essex Probate , I:245]

"Mrs. [James] Noyes cared for Mr. Parker during his years of blindness and his feeble health until his death on April 24, 1677. By his will she was given all his Newbury property, except land in possession of Nicholas Noyes, and all arrears due for his ministry." [Ibid., III:153]

Noyes Pedigree

Among his printed works are "A Catechism for Children", 1641, "The Temple Measured", 1647, "Moses and Aaron", 1661; the last two are at the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Hudson and Mohawk Valleys

He had a grant of land on which he built a house, about 1645, in which he, his family, and Thomas Parker lived. This house is still standing (1910) and has never known any owner but a Noyes, and is Newbury's proudest showplace.

"Mr. Parker and Mr. Noyes were excellent singers, both of them, and they were extraordinary delighted in singing the psalms. They sang four times a day in the public worship and always just after evening prayers, in the family, where reading the Scriptures, expounding and praying were the other constant exercises."

father: Noyes, James (1608 - 1656)
mother: Brown, Sarah (~1610 - 1691)
Graduate Harvard 1659. Savage, Vol. 3: Began to preach in Stonington, Connecticut in 1664, residing in the family of Thomas Stanton, yet was not ordained before 10 September 1674, the day before he was married to Dorothy. The meeting house in which he preached was a short distance southwesterly of the present residence of Henry M. Palmer (1905). Mr. Noyes made his home on a large tract of land which he bought of Samuel Willis, of Hartford, on the road to Wequetequock. Preached 55 years. He served as a soldier and volunteer against the Indians in the Narraganset war and received land for services rendered in what became Voluntown, Conn. (Bodge's Soldiers of King Philip's war, page 443, Narraganset Register, Vol. 1, p. 144).Chief sachem of Narragansett Indians. Much honor attached to his name for so long faithfully fulfilling his ministry, as is shown in a most judicious funeral sermon by Adams of New London. Equally so, for service in the foundation of Yale College standing there as the first on the list of Fellows.

He was, in his day, one of the leading ministers of the colony, greatly respected for his wisdom and his piety. He was a distinguished preacher, carrying uncommon fervor and Heavenly zeal into all of his public performances. His ordinary conversation breathed a spirit of that world to which he was endeavoring to guide his fellow men. In ecclesiastical controversies he was eminently useful. He was a counsellor in civil affairs at some critical periods. He was selected to be one of the first trustees of the college (Yale); for though he was then an old man, and in a remote corner of the colony, his influence was deemed essential to the success of the undertaking.

(From Wheeler's History of Stonington, Conn.)
Rev James Noyes came to Stonington to preach on an invitation of the town in 1664. The meeting house in which he preached was a short distance southwesterly of the present residence of Mr. Henry M. Palmer, west of Montauk Avenue. Traditionally, we learn that he resided in the family of Thomas Stanton, Sr., until he was ordained, Sept. 11, 1674, and the next day he was married to Miss Dorothy, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Lord) Stanton. He made his permanent place of abode upon a large tract of land in Stonington, which he purchased of Samuel Willis of Hartford, Conn., where he erected him a dwelling house on the site of the present first house south of Anguilla, on the highway from there to Wequetequock, which became the first parsonage of the First Congregational Church of Stonington, where he lived the remainder of his life, dying Dec. 30, 1719. For the first ten years of his ministry he preached as a licentiate, and the last forty-five years as an ordained clergyman. He was Chaplain with Capt. George Denison's expedition that captured Canonchet, chief sachem of the Narragansett Indians, April, 1676.

""He was but 16 and his brother Moses but 13 when together they entered Harvard in 1656. His father died not long after his admission. Their father's friends and parishioners contributed to give the boys the best education then obtainable while they worked their way through college. After graduation in 1664 he went to Stonington, Conn. where he was invited by the town to become their minister and took the freeman's oath October 5, 1669. He received as a gift from the town a grant of 250 acres of land, called Musqueta, and later known as Noyes' Point, Westerly, R.I. which remained in the family for several generations..

(From La Verne W. Noyes' "Noyes and Allied Families")
"In April, 1697, upon the motion of the Honorable Lieut. Governour Stoughton, and information that the enemy, Indians, intended to scatter into small companies, to do mischief upon His Majestie's subjects, the Governour and Councill also being moved by the worshipful Captain Samuel Mason and the Reverent Mr. James Noise, ordered a letter sent to Capt. Samuel Mason and Mr. James Noise desiring them to promote of raising twentie or thirtie men, English and Indians, furnished with arms, ammunition and provision, to range the woods between Nashua (now in N.H.) and Deerfield, Mass., and near Mamerrimack River, and between Hadley and Marlburrough as they shall judge best. And the Governour and Councill being informed that the enemy, Indians, intended to scatter and to sett upon the small towns upon the river that were secure. Warrants were sent to the several constables of the towns in danger to see that due watch and ward be kept." (Conn. Col. Record, Vol. 4, p.196). Appointed by Assembly one of a committee to settle differences regarding division of land in Quinnebaug. In 1708 he was granted 200 acres of land.

The remains of Rev. James Noyes are buried in the ancient burying-place ground, upon a sloping hill on the east side of Wequetequock Cove, midway between Stonington, Conn., and Westerly, R.I. A light brown stone covers the remains and upon it is cut the Coat of Arms of the family.

The epitaph was written by Reverend Eliphalet Adams who graduated from Harvard College in 1694 and who died in 1753, and who was in 1720, pastor of the First Congregational Church of New London, Conn.

The original draft of the epitaph was in 1889, in the Sunday School Library Room of the First Congregational Church of Stonington, Conn.

His body was interred 1719 Stonington, Conn, old Wetequequock burying ground. The pier slab that for over a century has been over the grave of Rev. James Noyes of the old Wetequequock burying ground, Stonington, Conn., was relettered at Doty's marble works in the 1890s. The following is the inscription on it: "In expectation of a joyful resurrection to eternal life here lyeth interred the body of the Rev. Mr. James Noyes aged 80 years who after a faithful living of the Church of Christ in this place for more than 55 years deceased Dec. ye 30, 1719-20. Majesty, meekness and humilty here meet in one with greatest charity. He was first pastor of the Road Church and Society." Graduated at Harvard College and was ordained as pastor of the church in Stonington the day before his marriage. He was one of the founders of Yale College. He drew Cedar Swamp lots for Indian war service.

(Hist. of First Cong. Church)

On Aug. 28, 1692 he baptised Chimham, an Indian who he then raised.

MI Pioneer & Historical Collections Vol XXX 1903-04 -- James was in War of 1812 and the Black Hawk Indian War. In both he was a musician and played the fife and flute. He was a great student of history. P 454 -- Captain James Noyes of Gourdneck Prairie and Ephraim Harrison of Prairie Ronde were captains of the Prairie troops.

The Alphadelphia Association--Its History in Comstock, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan--The Alphadelphia Assn believed in pastoral communion. Coming down through the ages into our own time, we find Charles Fourier of France teaching this principle in America through Dr. H.F. Schetterly, a German, who lived in Comstock. A group of sturdy pioneers took up Alphadelphia society. Among them was James Noyes, born 1793. To live together in harmony was the object; to live and work and enjoy the benefits of each other's society and the fruits of their own labor like a happy, united family. After four year's trial, it was a total failure. There were 300 members all together. A large number put their farms into the Association. Others put in various kinds of property. James Noyes put in his saw mill which was valuable in furnishing lumber to the Society. From their first meeting on the domain March 21, 1844, until the last entry on the journal on April 30, 1848, the presidents were Anson Gelmutter, B. Wright, Harry Keith, Lymann Tubbs and James Noyes.

Pioneer Society of Michigan, Vol I, page 334 (1874-76)--In 1825 there were nine small houses in Ann Arbor, MI, located and occupied as near as can be ascertained as follows: Elisha W. Rumsey occupied the "Wasterman Coffe House" and John Allen the block house. A long house with a frame addition stood on the northeast corner of Main and Ann Streets. Two small houses stood on opposite sides of Main Street near where Guffy's Store now stands and were occupied by the two brothers, James and George W. Noyes.

James Noyes was an agent for the Indians when he lived at Pavilion, MI. The three children who survived (Elizabeth, James and Sarah Melissa) always told of the good times they had playing with the Indian boys and girls and of how many playmates they had during the time that the Alphadelphia Society existed and all the people lived in one community.

James Noyes conducted a part of the underground railroad which helped escaping slaves get to Canada and freedom. Slaves were kept in his barn by day and then taken on by night to the next station. His second wife was a southern sympathizer, so this caused a great deal of friction.

"History of Kalamazoo County, MI, Its Prominent Men and Pioneers, 1880--James Noyes came in October of 1830 from Ann Arbor, and settled NE/2,NW/4. Sect 23, where he built a log house and made improvements. He sold this land in 1831 and bought new lands in the township of Brady, on which he erected a sawmill, which, with his farm, he put into the Alphadelphia Society. On the disbanding of the society in 1848, he retained his property. He died at his home in Brady many years since. (p.353). From their first meeting on the domain March 21, 1844, until the last entry on the journal on April 30, 1848, the presidents were Anson Gelmutter, B. Wright, Harry Keith, Lymann Tubbs and James Noyes. (p.369).

Rev. James Noyes , Superintendent of the New Hampshire Orphans Home, in the town of Franklin, Merrimack County, 1886-1901, is a native of Columbia, Coos County, N.H. He was born July 2, 1835 , son of Eleazer and Sophronia (Cass) Noyes.

James Noyes received his early education at Newbury Seminary, Vermont . On December 1, 1861 , he enlisted in Company C of the Eighth Vermont Infantry, under Colonel Thomas and Captain Foster , and did service in this company in the Gulf Department until transferred from the Eighth Vermont, in 1862 , to the Second Louisiana National Guards. Mr. Noyes was appointed Sergeant Major, was promoted to position of First Lieutenant, and afterward became Captain of Company G, later known as the Seventy-fourth U. S. C. I. He remained in active service for four years, and was honorably discharged in October, 1865 . Returning to Newbury, Vt. , at the close of his military career, he there attended the seminary for post-graduate work; and, entering the Theological School of the Boston University in the fall of 1866 , he graduated from the three years' course in 1869 , and at once joined the New Hampshire Conference. He was located at Methuen, Mass., for three years, and was afterward stationed as follows, to wit: at Suncook, Lancaster, Portsmouth, Amesbury, Mass., Milford, N.H., Winchester, Newport, and Franklin Falls, N.H., leaving the pulpit then to take charge of the Orphans' Home at Franklin, N.H.

On February 19, 1859 , Mr. Noyes married Amy E. Scott , of Newbury, Vt. , a daughter Rev. Orange Scott and his wife, Mrs. Eliza Dearborn Scott . Her father is dead; and her mother, now ninety-four years of age, resides with the Rev. Mr. Quimby , of Penacook . Mrs. Amy E. S. Noyes died December 4, 1875 ; and Mr. Noyes married in September, 1876 , Miss Fannie M. Barker , of Derry, N.H. , daughter of Mr. Benjamin Barker , deceased. There are three children by the first marriage: Fred S. , a compositor in the employ of the Methodist Book Concern, New York City ; Frank W. , engaged in the drygoods business in Franklin, Mass. ; and Amy F. , a student at the Conservatory of Music in Boston . The only child by the second marriage of Mr. Noyes is Clara L. , who is now taking a course at the College of Liberal Arts, Boston University.

The New Hampshire Orphans' Home, of which Mr. Noyes is the efficient Superintendent, was founded by the Rev. Daniel A. Mack , of Plainfield, Vt. , and was established and chartered in October, 1871 . The institution is located in the town of Franklin , in the beautiful valley of the Merrimac, eighteen miles from Concord . Here was the boyhood home of Daniel Webster . He became the owner and retained possession while he lived, and he made annual pilgrimages to it after he had become a leading man in the nation. The family mansion still remains as a part of the Home, which also includes a building for the nursery and the farm. The nursery was added to the Home in 1894 at an expense of about sixteen thousand dollars, this sum being covered by subscription during the year. The Orphans' Home is a private charity and is nonsectarian. More than one hundred homeless children have here received education and kindly loving care during the year just passed, and more than seven hundred in all have thus been cared for since the Home was established. In the school-rooms the common branches and kindergarten studies are taken up. The place is essentially a great farm home, with as little of the "institution" in its management and atmosphere as is consistent with discipline and good order. Mr. Noyes , who began his labors October 1, 1887 , has carried on the good work begun by his predecessors in the most admirable manner and to the satisfaction of all interested in the welfare of the little ones in his charge. Mrs. Noyes as matron presides, and the nine years of their service has been a period of great prosperity and usefulness. Mr. Noyes is well known throughout the county, and is much respected as a man whose life has been animated by the most unselfish motives in working for others.
