b. BEF 18 OCT 1657 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts

father: Rix, Thomas (*1624 - )
mother: [Ward], Margaret (*1629 - 1660)
He lived and was taxed in Salem, removed to Wenham, Mass., but returned to Salem, and had been taxed during his absence, but, learning the circumstances of his absence, his taxes were remitted. Mr. Rix and his wife were members of the First Church, Salem, from which they both withdrew, June 6, 1703, the year he went to Preston, Conn. He went to Stonington, Conn., in the summer of 1703, but bought the same year a large tract of land in Preston of Joseph and Ephraim Minor.

In Preston, and near his farm, is an old burying ground known as the "Rixtown burying grounds," where many of the family are buried. The old homestead had remained in the family until about 1880, when it passed to others, but, as a correspondent wrote, "The farm is there still." November 22, 1727, James deeded to his son, Thomas Rix, "for in ye consideration of ye natural love, good will and fatherly affection that I bear to my loving and dutiful son Thomas Rix of Preston, a certain tenement and housing and lands, being two-thirds of ye farm that I now live upon, reserving to myself and my wife Margaret part of ye house." Ref., Book of Deeds, 4, page 400, Preston Books.

A deed from James Rix to Ebenezer Lambert, of date Nov. 3, 1703, and recorded in Salem, shows him to have been a shipwright, and shows also Margaret, wife of James Rix, was of Preston.

In the diary of Joshua Hempstead, before referred to, can be found the following about James.

Mr. Hempstead, being in want of a shipwright, goes to Preston and engages James Rix, and in his diary of date, Monday, June 18, 1716, says: "Goodman Ricks come to work for four pounds fifteen shill. pr. month, half goods (viz.) salt and rum." Tuesday, July 10, 1716, Mr. Hempstead enters in his diary, "Ricks has gone to caulk Pelton's sloop." Friday, Oct 5, 1716, he says: "Nathl. & Robert is gone to carry 8 bushels of salt to Robt. Stoddard for Mr. Ricks." Jan. 9, 1717, he settled with Mr. Ricks. Mr. Hempstead records in his diary, Sept. 29, 1729, "Old Goodee Ricks was buried, aged about 76."

James and wife were buried in the "Rixtown burying grounds," and both have gravestones, but the only letters legible is on one of them, M. R. 1711. It is very evident he married, second, Margaret, as she was named in the deed to his son Thomas in 1727.

When James settled in Preston, there were no buildings on the place, and the only way to reach the land was a rough bridle path from Norwich, ten miles away. James probably came from Salem to New London by boat, for he came up from that place to Preston.

The farm at this date (1905) is in the town of Griswold, which part was taken off from Preston in 1815.

Within a few years after the settlement of the neighborhood, a cemetery was established, and bodies buried there probably by permission, but in 1737 the land was deeded to twenty-two residents, and among them was Thomas Rix. From time to time several additions were made to the grounds and at this date (1905) thirty-seven Rix's are buried there. The compiler paid a visit to these grounds in September, 1905, and located without any doubt the graves of Thomas Rix the emigrant, his son James and wife Margaret, his first wife, where all three lie side by side. James may have lived in Ipswich, where his first child may have been born.

father: Rix, James (1685 - )
mother: Herrick, Anna (1696 - )
Mr. Rix joined a party of thirty-three men in Salem, Mass., to settle in the wilderness, and chose the town of Boscawen, N. H., and were the first settlers. This was in 1733, but it seems Mr. Rix did not remain there long, for he came to Concord, married and lived there at least till he had two children born. At it was customary to elect a young married man to the office of hogreeve, he was elected to that office, the year of his marriage. During the Indian raids, in 1746, the inhabitants were told to repair to the garrisons whenever the Indians showed themselves, and among those to repair to the garrison of Timothy Walker, Jr., was Nathaniel Rix and family, which garrison stood where the Franklin Pierce house now stands in Concord.

Nathaniel Rix enlisted in Concord, Jan. 21, 1745, in Capt. John Clough's company of scouts; dismissed Mar. 18, 1745. He also enlisted Apr. 24, 1755, in Capt. Joseph Eastman's company, Col. Joseph Blanchard's regiment in the expedition against Crown Point; discharged Oct. 21, 1755.

His first two children were born in Concord and it seems he returned to Boscawen, where his son Nathaniel was born; he was again a resident of Concord, where he was taxed in 1757 and 1758. His military record can be found in the "Military of New Hampshire," page 185. Mr. Rix was a teamster and it is a tradition that on his return from a trip from Boston he put up at a public house and fell downstairs and broke his neck.

father: Rix, Nathaniel (1714 - )
mother: Peters, Mary (*1721 - )
He resided in Landaff till 1799, when he removed to Stanstead, Canada, where he bought a large tract of land about two miles from Stanstead Plain, and cleared up a good farm, where he remained till about 1820, when he sold out and returned to the States and settled in Littleton, N. H., near his son Nathaniel. He was in Newbury, Vt., in 1773, and he signed a petition to the New York Assembly for a conformation of his grant and for the remission of one-half the usual fees. He was one of 400 signers in the presence of Hon. Samuel Wills, a judge of the court of Common Pleas. The petition was dated Jan. 26, 1773. (Documentary History of New York, Vol. 10, pp. 449-500.)

He was a revolutionary soldier, being one of the first to enlist from Landaff. He served in Capt. Samuel Young's company, Col. Bedel's regiment, from Dec. 15, 1776, to Mar., 1777, also in Capt. Hutchin's company from Aug. 18, 1777, to Sept., 1777. He was also a drummer in Capt. Luther Richardson's company, Col. Bedel's regiment, from Apr. 6, 1778, for eleven months and twenty-five days. He was also in a Mass. regiment, and his name appears on the rolls of that state. His signature appears on a receipt for bounty paid by Haverhill, of date Dec. 2, 1780. He was probably on a visit to his brother, James, and perhaps was induced to enlist because of a larger bounty than New Hampshire paid.

A lodge of masons was organized in Stanstead in the early settlement of that place, and it is believed Mr. Rix was made a mason there, for in 1821, his son Nathaniel was master of Morning Dawn Lodge, located at Waterford, Vt.; it is recorded on the records of the lodge that "Nathaniel Rix, Sr." was a visitor. As father and son were well known as Sr., and Jr., it pretty well establishes the point that Nathaniel, Sr., was a mason. The compiler has searched all masonic publications, but can find no mention of a lodge as having ever been established in Stanstead, yet it is a fact that one was organized there. Hon. Albert S. Batchelder, of Littleton, N. H., searched high and low for the records of both the Stanstead and Waterford lodges, but only one has been found and that of the Waterford Lodge, which was found in Washington.

He probably went to Old Preston, Conn., where his son James went in 1703. In the New London County (Conn.), Historical Society's publication, Vol. I, can be found the most remarkable diary extant by Joshua Hempstead, of New London, Conn. For forty-seven years nothing hardly escaped this man's observation, and which he recorded. This remarkable man was at once a farmer, surveyor, house and ship carpenter, attorney, stone cutter, sailor and trader. Being in want of a shipwright, he goes to Preston and engages Goodman Rix. In his diary he says: "Nov. 1st, 1718, I went to the funeral of Old Ricks who died last night." This must have been Thomas, the emigrant, and being called "Old Ricks" indicates he was the oldest Rix in Preston. In a deposition he says he was born in 1622.

From a boy, he seized every opportunity for improvement. He read much, and thus became well informed upon the topics of the day, and in advancing years was the trusted advisor and friend of many of his townspeople.

In 1841-2, he became interested in the temperance movement known as the "Washingtonian," first started in Baltimore, Maryland. In this he worked with the zeal and ardor that characterized any enterprise in which he took part. This work was so thoroughly done that soon there was a marked change in the town. For a number of years it was impossible for a man to obtain intoxicating liquor nearer than Charlestown.

In 1841, he was chosen president of the Wakefield Bank. He held this position until his death, in 1867. He united with the Baptist Church in December, 1838. No one loved the old church better than he, and he was always trying to do something for its prosperity. He filled a large place in the growth and advancement of his town.
