He removed from his native town of Pownal, Me., where the majority of his descendants made their homes for many years; but have been distributed into many sections of the country. This branch will now stand separated from the main line of the Freeport families under the above title. Benjamin was interested in military affairs and was commissioned during the war of 1812-13 as Major and was widely known as "Major Ben." Tradition makes him a stately and dignified specimen of manhood who took great pride in his martial appearance when on the field. Found no record of his death or that of his wife in Pownal and suppose he died in some other town.

Was this the Baptist minister whose descendants were living in Tennessee and a grandson, Grant Soule, Esq., is a prominent lawyer in the West?

When a young man, Aug. 20, 1800, this James Soule was disowned by the Quaker Society for "being out of plainness and attending a place of diversion." He had issue by both wives and their names will presently appear.

Allen Speakman, second of the thirteen children of Cyrus Newlin and Sarah Ann (Cloud) Speakman. Educated at school of Jonathan Gause, Greenwood, Del.; taught school for a number of years near Coatesville, Pa., where he had moved. During the Civil War, he served on the Sanitary Commission, and was collector of internal revenue for Chester County. Later he moved to West Chester, Pa., but in 1869 went to Wilmington, Del., where he went into the plumbing business first known as Speakman Bros. This was one of the first sanitary plumbing shops in that city, his brother Joseph Speakman being associated with him. Later was very successful as Speakman Supply & Pipe Company and moved to larger quarters. He was a member of the education committee of Friends School, Wilmington, Del. In 1899 he and his family removed to Claymont, Del., where he took an active interest in the Claymont public school. Was a director also of the Central National Bank of Wilmington, Del.

Educated at Friends School in Wilmington, the Wilmington High School, and the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Joined his father's firm of Speakman Bros., plumbing contractors. The firm prospered; moved to larger quarters, and in the late 1890's, the firm of Speakman Supply and Pipe Co., entered the manufacturing field, having for a decade served plumbers in the vicinity as a jobber of plumbing supplies. In 1906, the firm moved to larger quarters where they began extensive manufacturing of brass plumbing fixtures. The plumbers supply store continued in business until 1917, when it also moved to larger quarters. Through his industry, foresight, sourage and ability, Mr. Speakman built the Speakman Company to a concern of outstanding position in its field. In addition, Mr. Speakman contributed a great deal to Civic affairs in Wilmington and Delaware. He was responsible for the passage of the Delaware Workmen's Compensation Act some years ago. In 1916, he was appointed a member the Wilmington Board of Harbor Commissioners and in 1917 was elected President of the Board and served in that capacity until his death. The Delaware Waterfront Commission was created under his guidance to care for the State's water frontage and to protect its interest. He served as chairman of this Commission from its inception. He was appointed the sole Republican member of the first W.P.A. Commission for the State of Delaware by President Roosevelt to expand building in 1933 when the country was in the depths of the depression. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association and also the American Association of Port Authorities.

Graduated high school with the honor of Salutatorian. She attended two years at Arostook Normal School and was a member of the United Parish Church, Fort Fairfield.

He was elected surveyor of highways 1701,1710,1714, constable 1713. In 1702 he sold his homestead in the North Precinct 11 acres with an old house thereon and removed to the South Precinct, now Randolph and located on the east side of North St. at Braintree line on the last lot of the Second Division of Purchase Lands, one share of which he drew in the allotments.

He was a stonemason and farmer. He lived in Gardiner during the greater part of his life. In early life he was a Whig, later a Republican. He was a devout member of the church.

Revolutionary soldier.

He attended the public and high schools of his native town and the Houlton Business College. He assisted his father on the homestead until May, 1912, when he bought a farm on Center road, Fort Fairfield, consisting of one hundred and eighty-four acres, of which one hundred and fifty acres are under cultivation. In politics he is a Republican. He attends the Free Will Baptist Church, and is a member of Limestone Grange, of which he has been secretary and assistant steward.

He attended the public schools of his native town and graduated from the high school there in 1888. He assisted his father on the farm until 1890, when he bought a farm in Limestone, consisting of one hundred and fifty acres, all under cultivation except twenty-five acres of woodland. In politics he is a Progressive. He has been selectman for five years, and has also been road commissioner and member of the school board. He attends the Free Will Baptist Church. He is a member of Limestone Lodge, No. 120, Knights of Pythias, of which he is past chancellor commander; member of Limestone Grange, No. 272, Patrons of Husbandry, of which he has been master. He is also a Mason, member of Limestone Lodge.
